I have never met anyone with an eating disorder whose story didn’t make
sense to me. In the more than forty years I have been practicing psychotherapy
(including twenty as a psychoanalyst), treating hundreds of patients with eating
disorders, I have come to believe that eating disorders are eminently logical:
Food is there when no one else is. Food helps when no one else can. Food
is protection, comfort, presence in the dark of day or night. How can you
give up the only thing you can count on?
Yet every day, millions of people caught up in cyclical eating disorders
try and do exactly that. They wake up each morning promising themselves
to end their tortured relationships with food. They vow to be ‘good’, to eat
only vegetables, to resist all temptations. But when their planned regimens
collide with the emotions that overwhelm their minds, the promises dis -
integrate: “Something happens,” and within a fraction of a second, their resolve
disappears. It is as if they literally ‘lose their minds’, unable to recall why they
should do anything but eat foods they just seconds before had no thought
of, or hunger for. Whether they then binge and purge multiple times a day,
or gain and lose the same weight over and over again, the minds of people
with cyclical eating disorders are on a merry-go-round. They turn to food
over and over again for reasons having little to do with feeding the nutritional
needs of their bodies, but then seek ways to eliminate what they’ve taken
in. The same food they need with a fierceness that transcends their ability
to think in one moment, turns toxic and perilous in the next. The need to
get food out of their bodies—by purging, using laxatives, engaging in excessive
exercise, or starving in order to lose weight—soon becomes as urgent as was
the need to take it in.
