MIKAELA, A THIRTY-YEAR-OLD NURSERY SCHOOL TEACHER, was as
excited to be pregnant with her first baby as anyone I’ve ever seen.
Determined to be the best mother she possibly could be, Mikaela spent her
entire pregnancy preparing for her newborn. She read every book on parenting
and infant development she could get her hands on, and by the time little
Max was born, she had an entire bookshelf filled with instruction manuals.
But Max, it turned out, was not exactly what Mikaela had expected when
she was expecting. He was born jaundiced—the result of liver toxins that hadn’t
been properly eliminated before birth. Though Max’s doctors insisted that
Mikaela nurse him as frequently as possible in order to help wash the toxins
out of his system, Max was what the lactation nurse called a “sleepy baby.”
He simply wasn’t interested in nursing, and particularly not at the three-hour minimum
intervals the pediatricians were insisting upon. When Mikaela
brought Max into a session when he was three-days old, she was beside her -
self. Max was resisting the feeding, thrusting his head from side to side, spitting
up, fussing as she tried to get him to latch on, and promptly falling asleep even
when he did. A battle royal was in the making. Mikaela wanted to do what
was right, what the pediatricians had told her would be best for her baby, but
her baby clearly had not gotten the memo!
